The Selection by Kiera Cass (8/10 Pandas)

The Selection by Kiera Cass
I recently finished reading The Selection by Kiera Cass. It is a dystopian novel that in a sense follows certain principles similar to The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
It is based in the United States in the future when all the individuals are in a caste system and each caste has certain roles that they play. This particular story follows a girl by the name of America Singer and she is a Five. Her family is a group of musicians and they have fallen on hard times.
While on the other side of the country the king and queen of the nation have put out a message that their son Prince Maxon is going to choose a bride. They are going to go through a process called The Selection, where girls of a certain age can sign up to participate and those chosen will go to live in the palace and the prince will narrow it down until he finds his future bride.
When America signs up based on the pressure from her family she doesn’t believe she will be chosen. Although she also doesn’t want to be chosen because her heart belongs to another. The issue with that is he belongs to another caste and her family doesn’t want her to marry into a caste below her. The biggest shock of her life was when the one she loved broke her heart and she was chosen for the Selection.
Now America is living in the palace and is trying to balance whether or not she has feelings for the Prince and her lingering feelings for the one back home. As the numbers of selected girls dwindle it is coming to the point of the ones that the Prince is seriously considering marrying, while outside the palace walls groups of rebels are trying to invade and destroy the government from the inside.
When the book ended it ended on a cliffhanger and I am hoping that in the next book The Elite they tie up the loose ends. While the books aren’t as violent as The Hunger Games trilogy it is definitely a book you should give a try if you enjoy dystopian-esque novels.
